Tripp Powell was born and raised in Tuscaloosa, attending Central High School and graduating salutatorian in 1998. He stayed close to home for college, graduating magna cum laude from the University of Alabama with a degree in Business Management. Outside of academics, Tripp was a member of the Alabama football team from 1998 to 2000, where he received a letter and achieved Academic All-SEC.
Once Tripp graduated, he worked at Kuykendall & Powell Oil Co., Inc., the family business founded by his grandfather and great-uncle. Tripp later purchased the business from his father and was the company president and owner from 2010 to 2020.
Tripp served as director of the Petroleum and Convenience Marketers of Alabama from 2015 to 2020, where he worked with Governor Ivey’s lottery advisory board for lottery distribution network creation and worked with Lt. Governor Ainsworth’s office on best practices for COVID reopening protocols. Additionally, Tripp is part of the Alabama Small Business Commission, where he worked to create a plan for safely reopening the Alabama economy that was presented to the Lt. Governor, and later used as the framework for protocol set forth by the Governor.
The Powell family has been heavily involved in the west Alabama community for generations, and Tripp is no exception.
Tripp and his wife Lesley have been married for 19 years and have two daughters, Leigh, 15, and Libby, 11.
